Aeterna Noctis confirms its release date and Epic Games Store page

Aeterna Noctis has become a highly anticipated Metroidvania. We are glad to announce two big news: Aeterna Noctis has just opened its page on the Epic Game Store, and there's a new teaser which confirms the release date of our game: 15th December.

In addition to a release date, the video has also provided new details about the 2D adventure of the King of Darkness and his eternal war. Besides, this time the new gameplay trailer has been shared by PlayStation on their main Youtube Channel.

Our next title can be described as a “pure Metroidvania experience”. The images we've selected for this new teaser speak for themselves, the player must put their skills to the test to unlock all the secrets and alternative routes. Challenging platforms and frenetic combat are presented as the pillars that sustain the game core of Aeterna Noctis. In the video, you appreciate the number of options available to overcome each confrontation and the successive puzzles, from very dynamic skills such as a teleportation mechanic to others to which we are more used such as the double jump and the dash.

More than 100 different enemies populate the 16 large and different areas of Aeterna Noctis, a roster of fantasy creatures, monsters and warriors that will put our reflexes to the test in levels that offer many opportunities when facing each fight.

We will face more than 20 legendary bosses that promise a true challenge. In this trailer, the King of Darkness appears facing some of these bosses using a huge arsenal of combat and movement skills, making clear the fluidity of the game in each of its gameplay mechanics. But this is nothing compared with what awaits you! We promised that the content shown on this teaser is just a small sample of what the player can expect.

In a Metroidvania, there is also room for a deep story full of details. Some NPCs featured in this new teaser, the player must interact with them to progress in their adventure and unlock secondary missions, in which special care has been taken when deepening into the lore and contributing to the main story thread. Aeterna Noctis assures us that an epic story awaits us in which we must help the King of Darkness to regain the power of Aeterna.

Step by step we are approaching the final goal. Now we have confirmed the official release date, but there's a lot of great news to come in the next weeks. Thank you so much for your support!

The first episode of the Aeterna Noctis dev diary

The development diary of Aeterna Noctis has begun. After sharing our extended gameplay, some tracks from our OST, and getting the atención deserved by gamers and press, it is the right time to share with our community every single aspect of the design of our project.

Like any other diary about video game development, we are going to cover three main themes: art design, coding, and music, subjects that also include multiple independent and crucial assignments. Without going no further, we’ve started filming the design of a new area, which means that you will be able to appreciate the evolution of a particular character from start to finish.

We’re recording the work of our artists and how they turn a simple sketch into a fully detailed and colored image. As you can imagine, the art department is not only about drawing and coloring. You will see how the sprites come alive frame by frame, thanks to the talent of our animators, who can create fluid and smooth movements and attacks patrons.

One of the biggest strengths of Aeterna Noctis is our art design, based on traditional 2D techniques, so it makes sense that it will be the first entry into the development diary of Aeterna Noctis. We’re using pictures captured directly from drawing screens and also shots recorded in multiple camera angles so you can see how is the designing process. Our artists will even explain their job talking to the camera. We want to create a development diary that feels natural, where you can recognize the people responsible for the game you’re going to play.

Maybe it is too early to say this, but every new chapter is planned to be released for about one month and a half on our Youtube channel. During each 5 minutes video, you will get a new perspective about the video game industry and a close look at all the tools, talent, and effort needed to create a Metroidvania title.

We hope you like this initiative, it brings you closer to the work carried out by a videogame development studio to make a dream come true.

What can you expect from Aeterna Noctis in 2021?

This is a message for our incredible community. We all know that 2020 has been a year we will never forget due to multiple reasons you already know, but it was also the beginning of our journey with Aeterna Noctis. It’s been months of hard work, changes, and experiences until the game was officially announced, but there’s still a long way to go.

Let's take a look at some of the stuff we will share throughout 2021:

Six new areas you haven’t seen yet with a unique setting and design. These new levels with the Ascension Cave and the Light Tower, are only half of the game. Wish to see more? You will have to play it!

More gameplays featuring new abilities, combat skills, and mechanics. You only know a bit of what the King of Darkness is capable of. Wait to see the true power of your character.

Beginning of our development diary, starting with the art department. See for yourself how a videogame is created from start to finish, and take a look at every aspect of the game designing

New content to introduce you to the Aeterna Noctis lore, including cinematics. You will be able to understand the motivations of your character and how the world of Aeterna works, among many other details about the story, characters, and the mythology behind the rules of the game.

All of these wouldn’t be possible without the feedback of our fanbase and the kind words about Aeterna Noctis collected from the press and gamers. We’re glad to have such an incredible growing community supporting us. Hope you are spending a good time with your family and friends despite the difficult situation all around the world.

We confirmed the Aeterna Noctis OST Piano Collection

The development team of Aeterna Noctis confirmed that the OST of the game will be released in a “Piano Collection”. After the success of the official announcement back in October 2020 and our extended gameplay published by PlayStation Spain, we decided to take the next step forward and introduce to the community the OST of Aeterna Noctis in all its greatness.

What you can see on this video is the King of Darkness playing the piano with the Queen of Light, in a Casablanca-inspired composition. This 2D animation loop was made to highlight the talent of our art department and create a hypnotic image that feels natural and reinforces the effect of the music.

However, the best part of the video and the reason it was shared is its music. “The infinite Sea” is the name of this track and is performed only by piano chords adding some extra arrangements that make the song more emotional and complex than the vanilla version, which can also be found on the Aeterna Noctis Youtube channel.

The next 3 minutes video means that Aeternum Game Studios will release a “Piano Collection” of the Aeterna Noctis original soundtrack once the game is ready and available. It should be noted that The Infinite Sea is one of the 46 tracks that composed, never better said, the OST of the game. We will reveal more tracks during the next months as part of our marketing plan and also some extra music content for the incoming development diary. One of the biggest strengths of Aeterna Noctis is its art direction, and it also includes music and sound design. There is no better example of how we are taking care of every single aspect of the game that this track composed and performed with big expertise.

Aeterna Noctis presents an extended gameplay

Aeternum Game Studios has released an extended gameplay of more than 15 minutes to show more content about what their game has to offer. The new gameplay allows to appreciate more of the Ascension Cave and goes further into the game mechanics, so the viewers could see more about de level design, movement controls, and game features. The decisión of making a new gameplay was a consequence of the good reaction from the press and gamers all over the world then Aeterna Noctis was officially announced at PlayStation Talents: The Moment.

One of the most important features revealed during the extended gameplay was the levelling system. Aeterna Noctis has a skill tree where the player chooses the upgrades for the King of Darkness through three separate paths: melee combat, survival attributes, and magic abilities. Each one of these ramifications allows a deep degree of specialization but at the same time, is not mutually exclusive. Players are free to upgrade their characters as they want.

The extended gameplay takes place at the Ascension Cave, and introduces a new mechanic to the viewers, the mission system of Aeterna Noctis. The video shows how the King of Darkness talks to an NPC that gives him an important task in order to proceed through the story. He must go deeper into the cave and recover an important ítem. What follows is a fast-paced section pack-full of combat situations and platforming. The character makes his way through different sections of the area until he faces a powerful and huge creature.

This final encounter serves as a boss fight for the gameplay and shows the complexity of the combat in Aeterna Noctis. The player will need to be accurate with their moves and hit at the right time to win the battle. This boss fight was included in the gameplay to appreciate more aspects of the art style and sound design of Aeterna Noctis. The entire battle is matched with amazing animations, particles effects, and music.
